Commotio cordis is a phenomenon in which a sudden blunt impact to the chest causes sudden death in the absence of cardiac damage. It can occur when a ball, stick or hand strikes the chest directly over or near the heart. It is the second-most common cause of sudden cardiac death in athletes.
